Reporoa
Location
The Reporoa Valley lies midway between Rotorua and Taupo (30 minutes each way). The village is situated in the heart of the beautiful, predominately dairy, farming valley. The valley is at large flanked by both native and pine forests. There is a small geothermal area, which is host to the Ohaki geothermal power plant, in the centre of the valley. The main geothermal area is at the northern end of the valley at the Waiotapu Thermal Valley tourist attraction. The Waikato River adds to the beauty of the valley.
The valley's geographically central location means that day trips to such things as lakes, mountains, bush and beaches are possible.
People
The population of approximately 2500 have sources of income which include farming, teaching, agricultural contractors, Fonterra dairy factory staff, local businesses supplying farm services and supplies and sawmills to name a few.
A number of people also access employment out of the valley.
We are a caring community made up of a diverse range of people. Reporoa's early settlers relied on each other for their survival and so established a good foundation of clubs and organisations. Successive generations have built on this so that today the community of Reporoa offers a great range of things to be involved in.
As in other established farming districts there are some families with strong ties to the valley.
Facilities and Services
The valley is very well serviced.
The valley hosts a range of pre-school facilities, three primary schools and a year 7 to 13
college, all offering quality education. Along with their facilities they are an integral part of the community.
The business centre of the valley is situated in the Reporoa Village, which is known for one of the most rurally situated roundabouts in the country. Shops and service businesses cater well for the ongoing requirements of a rural community. The diversity of businesses ranges from 'the corner hardware store by the roundabout', the Community Health Nurses and local Community Constable, to the business conference centre on the banks of the Waikato River. Some Rotorua businesses provide a regular service to the people of Reporoa, for example a Solicitor comes out weekly and the library bus fortnightly.
Daily mail, courier and freight services cater for the out of the ordinary requirements.
Sports and other community clubs and organisations are many and varied and are scattered throughout the valley and have well maintained facilities. Most Reporoa sports teams play in Rotorua or Taupo competitions. Whole community events include the Christmas Carol evening in December and the Community Fair / Sports day in March.
A multi-page community newsletter facilitates communication within the valley and community twice a month.
Situated midway between two tourist towns we have a large number of people passing through our valley. The geothermal area of Wai-o-tapu Thermal Wonderland is the major tourist attraction in the area although talking to locals will reveal other thermal areas like Kerosene Creek and Butchers Pool not to mention the trout fishing spots!
